Need help! My 2015 Explorer had the Toe link recall done before I bought it, now it keeps eating tires after multiple alignments!

I’ve gone through 3 sets of rear tires and I’m about to need my 4th. I’ve had several alignments, but the tires are still wearing on the outside edge. I currently have the recalled toe link installed, and I think it’s the main issue. I’m planning to buy a new toe link bar and install it to fix this problem. Has anyone else experienced this?

3 sets of tires in 30,000 miles

That’s crazy. I hope you get it figured out. I’ve got a 2016, so I’ll be following.

I’ve had no issues with the toe link recall on my '13. Got it done in 2021, and I’ve driven over 40k miles since. Are you going to the same shop every time for tires and alignments? Maybe try another place.

I’ve been to 3 different shops and had the same issue each time. I think the recalled toe link isn’t allowing for enough adjustment.

That’s frustrating. I hope you can get it fixed. I’d be losing my mind going through tires that fast.

You should go to a Ford dealer to get the alignment done.

If a car can only be aligned by the manufacturer, there’s a bigger problem with the recalled part. Any shop with the right equipment should be able to handle it.

Alignments are vehicle-specific. If your alignment tech doesn’t know about the recall, they might not align it correctly.

Either you got the wrong links, or the shops don’t know how to align it properly.

The toe links are the ones from the Ford recall. I doubt 3 different shops would misalign it and fake the paperwork.

Total toe could be high. It’s also possible that you got the wrong links, as there are two different types with different lengths.

Have you checked the rear suspension bushings? Worn or loose bushings could cause alignment issues under different loads.

There’s plenty of adjustment in the slots. Take it back to the Ford dealer that installed the links and have them align it. If it can’t be brought into spec, something else is wrong with the rear suspension. Most alignment shops won’t realize that the recalled link is the toe adjustment.

I’m aware of that. I even showed the alignment tech a video of a Ford mechanic doing it. Same thing with the previous shop. If it’s this difficult to align, I’m going to replace the part with an upgraded version.

I’m not going to a Ford dealer. No thanks.

If you refuse to go to a dealer, you’re accepting the issue. If you don’t like your local dealer, try another one.

I think you missed the point of this post… I’m going to replace the recalled link so anyone can align it.

Good luck. Maybe just sell the car and get something simpler to deal with.

I already have 3 vehicles. I don’t need another.
