Why did the new Explorer come out with fewer trims than the 2024 version? There’s no Timberline, which was one of the most unique options. They’ve even removed the green color option. Also, the ST trim is now more expensive than the Platinum, and it’s the only one that got a price increase. There’s a new trim that seems to have replaced the base model or the XLT. The design looks good, but I’m not happy with the lack of options.
Ford usually starts with fewer trims at launch and adds more later. It helps them see what people are interested in and makes manufacturing simpler at first. They’re probably trying to avoid issues like they had with the last model’s launch.
The new infotainment system is pretty cool, though. You can access Google Play Store apps and even stream YouTube while parked. It also has wireless CarPlay now. Plus, they switched the screen to landscape, which looks much better.
I read this on a car site:
Ford’s BlueCruise hands-free driving system is now available on the 2025 Explorer. It’s not included on the entry-level Active trim but can be activated on others. It costs $700 upfront or $75 per month after a free 90-day trial.
$75 per month for BlueCruise?!
@Sage
What did it cost before?

I’m not sure, but $75 a month seems steep. It’s hard to justify paying that much when Copilot 360 is free.

It would make more sense as a one-time fee instead of a subscription.

Totally agree. Copilot 360 already does a great job.
@Sage
BlueCruise works well. I have it on my Lightning and got three years included. Would I pay $75 a month? Probably only if I was always on the highway.

How do you like the Lightning?
They’re talking about adding more models later, like a Tremor to replace the Timberline. Ford is simplifying manufacturing because they’ve had quality issues lately. That means fewer options but more standard equipment. It’s a downside for anyone looking for affordable or simpler trims.
@Sawyer
I really liked the Timberline and hope it makes a comeback.

The Timberline is likely gone, but the Tremor might be a good replacement.

I actually like this strategy. When I was shopping for my 2017 Escape, it was frustrating how much options varied. Almost every car was missing something I wanted, like AWD, heated seats, or a decent infotainment screen.
It’s probably related to parts shortages. Ford is adjusting trims based on what they can get. Also, the ST is a popular trim, so they’re cashing in on it by raising the price.
My wife has an ST, and it’s amazing. It has heated seats, massage functions, and a 10-speed transmission with sport mode. Best car we’ve owned.

I’m seriously considering it as my next car.

I used to have a 2018 Explorer Sport that I loved, but I traded it and regret it. I checked out the newer STs, but they don’t feel worth the $60k price tag. The materials seem cheaper now.
I’m more concerned about there being no base model anymore.

Honestly, the only people buying base models were police departments.
