What’s the smallest wheels I can use for my 2021 Explorer Platinum?

Just bought a 2021 Explorer Platinum and I live in upstate NY. Looking to get a set of winter wheels and tires. Any recommendations?

The Timberline models use 18-inch wheels.

From what I’ve seen, they share the same brakes as the Platinum even with different powertrains. That’s a solid starting point—thanks!

@Denver
Oh, and the base XLTs also run 18s. You should be fine with 18-inch wheels.

@Denver
I’ve got 18s on my ST with the big brake kit, so they’ll definitely fit your Platinum.

A lot of folks pick up 18-inch steel wheels from the Police Interceptor Utility and pair them with snow tires for winter.

That’s a great idea! Thanks for the tip!

Have you tried Tire Rack? They usually give package options and show sizes.

Tire Rack only shows me 20-22 inch wheels because of the factory 21s. There seems to be enough brake clearance for smaller ones, which is why I’m asking for firsthand knowledge.

@Denver
Oh, so you’ve got the same wheels as my ST but in chrome, right? Are your brakes smaller than the ST?

Yeah, similar wheels—275/45R21. I think my brakes are smaller: 13.75-inch rotors compared to 14.5-inch on the ST.

I’m in Central NY and use Firestone Weathergrip tires.

Are those on the factory wheels? I’d prefer a separate set for winter since 21-inch wheels for snow tires seem ridiculous.

@Denver
I swapped my factory 20-inch wheels for 18s and got an extra set of 18-inch rims with winter tires back in 2019. Separate rims make it easy to swap and give me a full-size spare if needed. Plus, 18-inch tires are cheaper and offer more options.

The base XLT trims come with 18-inch wheels.

Wait, 60k for a 4-year-old Explorer?

Do you really need snow tires? I’ve driven through over a foot of snow with no issues.

Probably not a need, but my wife will drive it often with our young son. Upstate NY lake-effect snow can be crazy—like 4-5 feet in 36 hours—so I want to keep them safe.

@Denver
If you’re dealing with 4-5 feet, maybe you need a snowcat instead!
