I had heard for some vehicles timing chains never have to be replaced? This varies by model then?

On this engine, if you’re doing a water pump then you’re doing chains.
Those vehicles luckily don’t have any trends of catastrophic failures, but they do suffer from generally low build quality.
Rusty frames, so crawl underneath and poke with a metal screwdriver.
My choice would be Toyota 4Runner or Highlander.

Mechanics call them Exploder. Our neighbor had one. Took it to the mechanic for something and when my neighbor drove it away after it was fixed, the mechanic tapped the vehicle and said “See you soon, little Exploder!”
