What do you love about your Ford Explorer ST?

I just got a Ford Explorer ST, and wow, it’s incredible! I was close to going for a Dodge Durango, but the tech and the twin-turbo six-cylinder sold me on the Ford.

For those who own one, what features or aspects of your Explorer ST do you enjoy the most?

The rear liftgate being 48" wide is a big deal—it can fit a sheet of plywood in the back.

It’s really fast, and the gas mileage isn’t bad (just about 1.5 mpg worse than my wife’s Limited with the 2.3 engine).

The massaging seats and 14-speaker sound system are amazing once you set up the EQ properly.

It’s packed with luxury features like de-icing wipers, auto high beams, rain-sensing wipers, cooled seats, and a full digital dash.

Oh, and did I mention it’s fast?

@Kim
It’s surprisingly great for Home Depot runs. Seriously, the plywood thing makes it practical. Also, always run premium gas—it’s worth it. I’m planning to keep mine for high mileage, so I’m not tweaking anything until something actually needs fixing.

The auto high-beam feature is so convenient. Adaptive cruise control could use a few more distance settings, but it’s still awesome, especially in heavy traffic. And if you’re driving at night, it’s a lifesaver.

For protecting the car, I’d suggest getting some 3M film on the bumper and lights to avoid bug damage. If you can afford it, a 5-year ceramic coat is a solid investment, though it’s pricey if done by a professional.

@Kim
Yeah, I wish the adaptive cruise had one more setting for closer following distance. Some drivers will cut in front of you in traffic, but I get that they’re sticking to ‘safe’ distances. Still, an ‘annoying driver defense’ mode would be nice!

@Kim
I never even thought about the 4x8 sheet thing, but that’s a great point. I loved that about my Avalanche years ago. Thanks for reminding me.

I also need to fix the EQ settings. Right now, the sound feels a bit flat.

@Indy
Do you have the 12- or 14-speaker system? My wife’s Limited has the 12, but my ST with the tech package has the 14, and there’s a noticeable difference in quality. The system isn’t perfect, but I’m happy with it overall. I do think the Sony system in my old 2013 Sport sounded clearer, though.

@Kim
I’ve got the tech package too. I’ll mess with the settings to see if I can improve it.

Here’s what I love:

  • Massaging front seats
  • Auto brake hold at stoplights
  • Intelligent cruise control
  • Heated and cooled seats
  • Multi-zone climate control
  • Wireless phone charger and built-in phone stand
  • Panorama sunroof
  • ST ground effects lights at night
  • Full-screen infotainment system
  • 15-speaker sound system
  • Remote start and lock/unlock through the Ford app
  • Navigation
  • Different dashboard displays for driving modes
  • Auto high-beam headlights, rain-sensing wipers, and dimming mirrors
  • Hidden keypad for keyless entry on the door
  • Hands-free liftgate
  • Collapsible third row and hidden floor storage
  • Actual spare tire (not just a can of Fix-a-Flat)
  • Ambient lighting choices
  • Emergency cornering assist and lane departure warnings
  • Self-parking assist
  • And of course, the 400 HP engine!

Did I miss anything?

@Merrick
I have a 2021, and reading this made me fall in love with my car all over again. It’s amazing!

For the price, nothing else matches it in performance. Sure, the interior isn’t super fancy, but it’s so much fun to drive and has plenty of tech to keep me happy. It’s perfect for road trips.

The best part? The aftermarket support is incredible. You can turn your Explorer into a canyon carver, a drag strip beast, or both!

I just got mine last month and I’m loving it so far! The performance is great, and it’s loaded with useful features. I’m still getting used to all the tech, but it’s been a game-changer for long drives. Anyone else surprised by how much storage space there is?
