I’m considering getting a Ford Explorer, but I’m wondering if it’s worth waiting for the 2023 models to come out. Do you think it will be hard to get a 2023 when they’re available?
As someone who worked as an engineer on the 2020 Explorer platform, I wouldn’t recommend it—unless it was free, and even then, I’d sell it and buy a Highlander.

This should be pinned. Thanks for the honesty and insight.

Why is that? Explorers seem to sell well, so they must be doing something right.
@Chen
They sell because of brand loyalty and demand, moving over 200k units a year. That said, working with Ford for 10 years (not as an employee), I’ve seen their standards. The 2020+ Explorer was rushed—missed deadlines, cost cuts, and delays led to too many shortcuts. There were yard holds for safety issues and incomplete assemblies. Personally, I wouldn’t touch it.
@Frankie
Appreciate the insight, even though I just bought a 2020. My wife and I love it, especially compared to our old 2012 Kia Sorento. The Explorer feels much heavier and safer. If you were in my shoes, what are a few things you’d watch out for?
@Willow
The major safety issues I know of were addressed through yard holds and recalls. My concern is about what might still be hidden. That’s why I’d stay away from the 2020.

Makes sense. Any specific issues I should mention to my mechanic to be proactive?
@Willow
I can’t name anything specific beyond what’s already been recalled. That’s part of the problem—it’s the unknowns that worry me.

Fair enough. Thanks for the advice.
@Frankie
Do you think the 2023 models will be better in terms of reliability?

I’ve been out of the auto industry for two years, so I can’t say for sure. I haven’t kept up with the latest changes.
@Frankie
Got it, thanks. I’ll do some more research.
Oh really? Why?
Why are you looking at an Explorer? Car and Driver ranks it 14th in its class.

I like the size, features, and look for the price. Are there better SUVs in this price range?
@Vine
What features are you prioritizing?

I need a large trunk, three rows of seats, heated and ventilated leather seats, remote start, a panoramic sunroof, and I’d prefer to stay under $50k.
@Vine
Just a heads-up—most “cooled” seats are ventilated, not true air-conditioned seats.
