Is the key fob for the 2016 Explorer really that bad? How can I fix or upgrade it?

The key fob for the 2016 Explorer seems really fragile. Every time I drop it, the fob breaks apart, especially the part that attaches to the key chain. This happens so often that it’s getting annoying. I’ve been looking around online but haven’t found many other key fobs that seem to work with the car. Is there a way to upgrade to a more durable one or fix the current one?

I had the same issue, so I bought a cover too! It worked great and made the fob way more durable. Got mine on Amazon for about $10. Totally worth it!

You might want to check out a local locksmith. They could have something compatible, or at least give you some advice on what to do next.

Be happy you don’t have a Police Interceptor model. The fob is super unique, and I’ve been waiting two weeks for my locksmith to find one and get it to me.

I have a 15 Explorer, and I ran into the same problem. I bought a new fob/key blank on Amazon, gutted my old fob, and moved the parts to the new one. Problem solved. Here’s the link: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B08R67BH18?ref=ppx_pop_mob_ap_share

I drop mine all the time and it hasn’t broken yet. It’s still in perfect shape, other than a small piece of silver trim peeling off. You can buy covers for them on Amazon though. My husband has one for his Infiniti SUV.

After the top part of mine broke off completely, I’ve been carrying it in a makeshift leather pouch. I didn’t know about the Amazon cases. Thanks for the tip!

I wrapped a strip of electrical tape around the edge, and it’s been working great so far!

I dropped mine so much that the internal clasp broke, so I had to superglue it shut. Surprisingly, it worked well to keep everything together despite more drops. It’s a bit of a hassle, but thankfully battery changes aren’t frequent, and acetone works for that.

I’m relieved I’m not the only one. My key fob is falling apart and is really cobbled together now. If it breaks at work, I won’t be able to get home. I really miss having a normal key.
