Does the 2018 Explorer Have an Eco Drive Mode? Anyone know?

Bit of a random question, but does the 2018 Explorer have an Eco mode that helps save gas? I feel like I’m at the pump way too often lately, filling up twice a week. I can’t seem to find much online about this feature.

It’s a 2018 XLT with a 3.5L engine.

Cruise control could help you save some gas.

I’ve been looking into that too. Do you think switching fuel types would make a difference? I’m using 87 now… would 85 do better?

@Tan
Not really—it’s mostly about your driving habits. Keeping your vehicle light, maintaining a clean air filter, and properly inflated tires all help. If you had a turbo engine, I’d suggest premium fuel.

@Hartley
Luckily, no EcoBoost here. I can only imagine the gas consumption with one of those.

Funny thing is, turbo engines can actually get better fuel economy compared to non-turbo… but only if you can resist flooring it!

@Hartley
Didn’t know that! Maybe that’s part of my issue too :grimacing:

Glad to help!

I’ve got the EcoBoost engine, and I can go about 9-10 days before needing to fill up.

My 2018 Sport with the turbo gets around 18.5 overall, mostly city driving with some highway trips thrown in.

What’s your average miles per gallon (mpg)?

I’ll double-check when I’m off work, but it usually says around 305 miles per tank on the dash display.

That’s actually pretty average. 305 miles is about 490 km. I usually get around 400 km per tank with mostly city driving, but can stretch closer to 500 km on the highway.

I also have a 2018 XLT 3.5 (non-EcoBoost).

Try using the fuel economy display (left side of the dash). If you keep the bar on the right side of the average line, it helps you monitor your fuel use. Made me realize how much that gas pedal affects my fuel tank!

I use the Fuelly app to track my mileage. My 2017 with the 3.5 NA engine averages 15.9 mpg with mostly rush-hour city driving. Not amazing, but about what I’d expect for the vehicle size.

I get around 18.8 mpg in the city with my Explorer. Cruise control and 40 PSI in the tires help.

40 PSI is pretty high. You might get better mileage, but it could wear the center of your tires faster.

Interesting! Mine are around 36-38 PSI. Good to know!

I’m averaging 24.5 mpg on my daily drive with an ‘18 Nautilus 2.7 EcoBoost, at 40 PSI. On a recent road trip going 70 mph, I managed 29.5 mpg over 230 miles. And I like using the gas pedal too!

I typically get about 21 mpg, mostly highway driving. Around 16-18 mpg in the city. Rarely hit more than 320 miles on a full tank.
