Any inputs on using AGM battery for Ford explorer.
Quicklane was charging $100 for installing a standard battery($180) where Costco battery is only $125 for standard and $180 for AGM. Thinking of DIY the battery. Any feedback or things i need to be wary of.
rep at the quicklane desk mentioned casually that i shouldnt go with AGM but seeing lot of good feedback on agm and Costco(interstate) said its compatible.
Have extended warranty on the car for another year or so.
Unless you plan to completely drain your battery, there’s not much difference between AGM and regular batteries. The main advantage of AGM batteries is that they can often be recovered if they get really low on charge. It’s good for peace of mind, but it won’t affect your daily driving much.
If you get an AGM battery, you’ll also need a charger designed for AGM batteries. Your usual Lead-Acid charger won’t work. I recommend the Noco Genius brand because it has a recovery mode.
If you decide to do it yourself, make sure the connections are tight. In my 3.5 NA, the battery is easy to access for DIY work. If you don’t have the right tools, use your $100 savings to buy a toolkit. It should be a quick, 15-minute job.
Always watch a video online first to make sure you can handle the job and have the right tools. Trust me, you’ll want to do this before starting.
I replaced the original battery with an AGM battery two years ago. We get really cold winters here (sometimes -30 to -40), and even though the car is kept in a garage at home, it’s often left outside at the cabin. The AGM battery hasn’t failed to start since I replaced it.
The premium and other models have a lot of electronics that use power all the time, so the AGM battery was a good choice. I also keep a jump start battery pack charged at all times, just to be extra safe.
