Has anyone here replaced the brake pads on a 2020 Explorer? Mine probably needs new ones, but I’ve read something about a ‘service mode’ online. I don’t know how that works. I used to do this kind of stuff on my old Elantra, but all this new tech has me confused. Any tips?
If you’re unsure about this, I’d suggest finding a mechanic. Brakes aren’t too pricey, and it might save you some hassle.

Or get a Factory Service manual. It’s concerning to ask such basic stuff.

I can handle brake pad changes and repairs, just haven’t dealt with service mode before. I’ll check out a service manual.
Service mode is for the electronic parking brake. Front pads are simple, but the rear ones need you to activate service mode. You can do it with a scan tool or by reversing the motor using a 12v battery or manually.
@Adi
How exactly do you put it in service mode?
You’ll need a scan tool that supports the electronic parking brake function.

I don’t have a scan tool. How do you reverse the motor instead?
@Aris
Check out some YouTube videos for a clearer guide. If you’re doing DIY work, you should consider buying a scan tool. They’re not too expensive—around $40-$50 for one with the features you need.
