I went out for a test drive this weekend, and I’ve always liked the look of the Explorer. So I tried out a 2023, but the first thing that happened? Banged my head on the door frame trying to get in. Then I sat in it and felt a bit cramped. I’m considering the Tahoe, which seemed to have more room, but it feels way too big for me. Any other tall people here driving a newer Explorer? How’s the long drive comfort? Let me know if you have tips or suggestions!
I’m 6’4" and drive a 2023 Explorer, and I actually feel like it’s got more headroom than most other SUVs. I’m really happy with the space. But I know being 6’8’’ brings its own set of issues.
I’ll mention this, though—there was a guy who’s 6’3” who said the backseat headroom was an issue for him, but he had the moonroof. I don’t have the moonroof, and it makes a big difference. Maybe the one you tried had a moonroof? That eats up a bunch of headroom. Could be worth trying one without it.
@Marlow
Good idea, I think the one I drove did have a sunroof. I’ll try finding one without it and see if it makes a difference.
@Marlow
I’m 6’5’’ and drive a 2025 Explorer ST. Front seat legroom is fine, and I’ve never had an issue with my head touching the ceiling, even in the second row. I’ve got the moonroof, too.
@Marlow
This makes sense. Without the moonroof, there’s definitely more space up top.
I’m only 6’ but still need to keep my seat as low as possible in the Explorer. Was your seat all the way down when you tried getting in?
@Gale
Yeah, even with the seat all the way down and back, I feel like I’m sitting a bit high. Another 8 inches taller would definitely be tight.

Haha, yeah, that’s a whole other level of tall. You’re making me laugh just picturing it.
I’m kinda surprised you’re even looking at an Explorer. You must have it rough in most cars!

Yeah, it’s not easy finding a good fit—cars just aren’t made for people my height.
@Gale
Have you thought about trying a Chevy Tahoe?

I did sit in a Tahoe, and it felt decent, but it’s a lot more money than I want to spend. I don’t want a $700 monthly payment. The newer Tahoes are nice but are usually 5-15k more than an Explorer with similar miles and year.
I came here hoping the Explorer could work for me because it feels like a more ideal choice than a Tahoe.
@Gale
Yeah, that’s tough. And don’t forget, the gas mileage on the Tahoe could be a hit on your wallet, too.
Wait, you’re really 6’8"?

Yup, that’s me.

My friend’s about that tall, and he drives a Ford Maverick. He loves it and actually drives for a living. Honestly, maybe just pick something you’re comfortable in! I’m only 6 feet, but I can tell you the seats in my Limited are super comfy.
My son is 6’7” and does fine in my old 2007 Explorer. Not much help if you’re looking for a newer model, but thought I’d share.
My husband’s 6’5", and my Explorer’s a tight fit for him. We’re planning to upgrade to an Expedition to give him more room. He fits great in his F-150, though.
Honestly, a mid-sized SUV like the Explorer might be pushing it at your height. You might want to look into an Expedition or another full-sized SUV.
Expedition could work, but that’s a big price jump.
