I’m a single guy, and I’ve always liked being in a bigger vehicle because it feels safer, and I love sitting up higher. But sometimes I wonder… am I wasting money getting a family-sized SUV just for me? Thinking of upgrading from my 2011 Escape to a 2025 Explorer.
If you like it, go for it. Just fold those rear seats down and take some road trips, even sleep in the back if you want! Honestly, nothing is a waste if you can make good use of it.

Exactly what I do! Seats folded, all my camping and beach gear fits right in. I even toss my bike in the back too.
Got a 2017 here. My seats have been folded flat for my dog since day one. It’s also perfect for sleeping on weekend trips.
Yep, single, no kids, and I got a 2020 Explorer Limited. Zero regrets!
I’m married but no kids, and I love driving an Explorer. I haul a lot of stuff for my business, so it works perfectly for me. I even know a single guy with one, and it doesn’t seem weird at all. Bottom line… if you like it, go for it.
@Hayes
Same here! It’s great for Costco runs and hauling all the bulky things we need around the house.
I drive a 2018 and am out dating… got to say, it’s a great ride for taking friends or dates out! Women seem to like the extra space, seat warmers, dual climate, comfy seats, and how high up it is. Sure, the MPG isn’t the best, but it’s perfect for long trips. As long as you get a model that’s more ‘rugged’ looking and not like a soccer mom car, it’s totally fine for a single guy.
Plus, compared to a flashy sports car, it feels like it shows a grounded personality—more practical and genuine.
@Marley
Hey, the early Escapes are kinda like mini Explorers though!

Haha, no way! I drove one while my Explorer was in for repairs, and it was awful. Zero depth to the accelerator and brakes, super jerky, and the seats weren’t comfortable at all. Might be better on older models, but the one I tried was a nightmare.
Single, no family, but I have three German Shepherds, so it’s perfect for them!
Single guy here with a 2018, and I love it. Tons of space if I need to take friends out, plus I can fold the seats for storage. Mine has 4WD and towing too, so it’s super versatile. Plan to drive it till it can’t go anymore!
Divorced… so I’m sorta single! I also have an ‘06 WRX STI that’s tough on my knees now, so I went with a 2015 Explorer Sport. My girlfriend has two kids, and they love it when we take the Explorer out instead of her Traverse.
I’m a big guy, 6’3", and I’ve always driven larger vehicles for comfort. The safety, cargo space, and towing capacity make it a great choice. Plus, if you’re dating, it’s more comfortable for everyone.
Single and a big guy myself (5’11", 340lbs). I got the 2022 ST-Line for cruising comfort and camping space. It’s also great for driving my elderly parents around. Just put on some Michelin CrossClimate 2 tires, so I’m set for winter!
I used to own an Astro van for 12 years, even when I was single for half that time. Just buy what you like; doesn’t matter what anyone else thinks.
I used to drive an Escape but upgraded to a 2025 Explorer ST, mainly so I could fit my road bike in the back.
Not single, but honestly, it’s just me in the Explorer 99% of the time.
Probably the youngest Explorer driver here! I’m 17, single, and have a 2021. Love it and still can’t believe I got my dream car at my age. Hard work pays off!
Single and driving a 2023 Platinum here.
