Anyone know what could be causing a rattling noise when I start my car? It doesn’t happen every time, only after it’s been sitting for a while.
Might be the VCT units failing. Does it only make the noise on cold starts after it’s been sitting for around 5 or 6 hours? You should have a shop check it out.

Yes! That’s exactly when it happens. Drove it down to my dad’s today for him to check, but of course, it didn’t make the noise this time.
@Kenan
Definitely sounds like the VCT units. It’s a pricey repair, but if they’re replacing those, it might be worth doing the water pump at the same time.

How much are we talking here? I’m frustrated because I mentioned this noise to my dealership, and they said it was just a low battery. Replaced the battery, and now my extended warranty is up.
@Kenan
You’re probably looking at a few thousand dollars. I’d recommend getting a few quotes from different shops.
If you’ve got the Sport or Platinum with the 3.5TT, it could be your turbos going bad.

It’s an XLT, and I don’t even know what a 3.5TT is, lol. I’m just a girl.

Haha, no worries! Is it an EcoBoost?
@Jude
My dad says it doesn’t have a turbo, but yes, it’s EcoBoost.

If it’s EcoBoost, then it does have a turbo.

Oh no … alright.

Just keep an eye on it. If the rattling gets worse, definitely get it checked out.
@Jude
Thank you! After looking into it, it does seem like this might be the issue. Super frustrating because I told the dealership about it, and they said it was the battery. Now my warranty’s expired, and it’s obviously not a battery issue.
Just sold my ‘16 Sport, and thank goodness I did!

Lucky you! Lol.

It was a nice ride, but some of the design choices are a pain—like the internal water pump, which costs $4-6k to replace. Then, if the turbos go out, they can damage the catalytic converter(s), and that cost is through the roof.
