Thinking of ordering a 2022 Expedition or Expedition Max. We’ll go with the second-row bench since it’s best for our three little kids, but I might remove the middle seat later for easier access to the third row as they grow. We already own a Thule rooftop cargo box and don’t mind using it on trips.
Leaning toward the Limited trim. Most driving will be city-based with summer road trips and the occasional winter getaway.
What are the pros and cons of the Expedition versus the Max? Personal recommendations are much appreciated!

Go with the Max. The bigger fuel tank is a game-changer for road trips.
Thanks for the recommendation! The larger fuel tank would definitely come in handy.
I’d also stick with the bench seat since it’s great for kids, but removing the middle section later is a solid idea. A good mat can make it look clean once the seat is gone.

Honestly, the extra 11.9 inches won’t make a noticeable difference for parking or fuel economy. It really comes down to whether the added space is worth the cost to you.

We had an 18 Expedition Max but just traded it for a Wagoneer. The Max had tons of space, but it drove poorly—very floaty with noticeable body roll. Hopefully, the 2022 models handle better.
Last time I rented an Expedition, the second-row middle seat didn’t come out—it just folded into a console. If you want easy access to the third row, consider getting captain’s chairs instead.

Thanks. I think you can unbolt the middle seat in about 10-15 minutes.

We’ve got a 2011 Expedition (regular length) with a second-row bench. I removed the middle seat temporarily since both my kids are in car seats, and it makes getting to the third row much easier. For road trips, we use a rooftop cargo box, so I don’t miss the extra storage. If I had the option, I’d go for the Max, though.
We’ve got a regular-length Expedition with captain’s chairs, and I’d never go back to a bench. If you’re towing or need more cargo space with the third row up, go for the Max. Otherwise, the standard length will do just fine. Also, definitely get 4x4 if you can. Ours is 2WD, and it struggled in snow—chains might have helped, but the roads weren’t bad enough for that.
