I’d be really much concerned about the transmission. Those model years are known for having frequent transmission problems. My mom had to replace hers three times before she gave up lol

$2,700 for a one-owner 2005 Explorer with 125k miles sounds like a good deal, especially if the 4x4 and engine are solid. But I’d worry about those rear windows and radio, maybe wiring or electrical issues

It’s always a gamble buying an older SUV, but this seems well maintained. Check for the transmission shifts. I’d suggest taking it for a long drive on both city streets and the highway before making your final choice

With 4x4 working and new brakes, it sounds solid for the price! Explorers are generally reliable but check if the suspension and undercarriage are rust-free, especially at that mileage.
Keep some extra cash fixes down the road

I def plan to check under the car for rust. Living in IL, that’s always a concern. Any ideas on how expensive it might be to fix the windows and radio? Wondering if that should be a deal-breaker?

For that price, it’s a great project SUV if you don’t mind doing some repairs. These mid-2000s Explorers aren’t bad but will nickel and dime you with small fixes.

I had an '05 Explorer myself ran like a champ even at 200k miles. Just make sure that transfer case and transmission don’t show signs of abuse.

consider also checking the drivetrain and transmission. The 4.0L V6 isn’t known for major issues, but at 125k, it’s crucial to check for any leaks or odd noises during acceleration. These things are costly to repair.
