Why shouldn't I just get an Explorer ST?

We’re a family with a 2-year-old and another baby on the way. Currently driving a Mazda3 Turbo, which has been perfect for one kid but is cramped with a rear-facing seat behind the driver. We generally pack light, but with baby #2, we’re looking for something with more space.

What’s important to us:

  1. Enough space for now and the next five years.
  2. Driving performance.
  3. A cost-effective way to achieve both (considering upfront cost, reliability, resale value, fuel efficiency, etc.).

The Explorer ST checks all the boxes for performance and space but feels like more than we need, both in size and performance. I’d also like to spend less if possible.

Other vehicles we’ve considered:

  • Lexus RX350
  • Edge ST

We’re open to midsize cars since we don’t necessarily think we need an SUV.

Rented an ST for a road trip—loved it. Tons of power and space. Easily fit three guys and a full cooler on the way back.

Consider a 2019+ BMW X5 xDrive40i with the B58 engine and ZF 8-speed transmission. It’s reliable, fun to drive, and can be found for under $50k with low mileage.

Totally agree. The X5 offers great driving dynamics and is a better buy than many SUVs in this category.

I like this idea but haven’t seen many available locally. I’ll widen my search.

Have you looked at a used Acura MDX Type S? Great mix of performance and family-friendly space.

I found one locally for about $50k CAD with 20k km. Seems like a decent deal compared to new.

What’s your budget? If you can afford higher running costs, German SUVs like the BMW X5 or Audi Q7 might be worth a look.

We’re aiming for $50k CAD or less.

STs usually come with second-row captain’s chairs, which can be less practical if you ever need to fit a third car seat. Also, Explorers have had a lot of recalls, particularly with the transmission.

If you like performance, consider the Mazda CX-90 Turbo I6. It’s stylish, handles well, and offers great space for a family of four.

Have you thought about a wagon? Options like the Cadillac CTS, Volvo Cross Country, or Mercedes E-Class wagon might give you the driving dynamics you want with family-friendly space.

What about a RAV4 Prime? It’s quick (0-60 in 5.5 seconds), has great fuel efficiency, and offers Toyota reliability. Perfect for a family of four.

One major issue with the Explorer ST is the lack of headroom in the second row if you opt for the moonroof. If you’re over 6’2”, it’s going to be tight.
