Why is the 2022 Ford Explorer ranked so low… anyone else confused?

I don’t get why reviews like the ones from Consumer Reports keep ranking the Explorer at the bottom. I’ve looked at a ton of 3-row SUVs, and the Explorer seemed like a solid choice to me. Even the base version has better acceleration and handling than some of the top-rated models like the Kia or Hyundai. Are these reviewers only looking at interior materials or something? For me, acceleration, handling, braking, and how it looks on the outside matter more. Anyone else see the disconnect?

They’re mostly comparing the XLT with the 2.3 engine to fully loaded models like the Hyundai Palisade or Kia Telluride. Those other SUVs come with more features for the same price as the XLT. If they compared higher trims, the Explorer might stack up better.

The Explorer had a rough patch in the early 2000s with reliability, so maybe that’s still hanging over its reputation. And yeah, higher trims can get pricey. I just got a 2022 Limited Hybrid, and I’m loving it. The rear-wheel drive feels so much better than front-wheel drive. Ford’s seats are seriously the most comfortable I’ve ever had. Sure, the fuel mileage isn’t the best compared to the competition—I’m getting about 27 mpg—but coming from a 2015 Silverado, I’m thrilled. It’s worth the smiles per mile even if gas prices are high.

@Skylar
Glad to hear you’re happy with it! The rear-wheel drive does sound like a big improvement.

@Skylar
I also got a Limited Hybrid and love it! I’m getting around 30 mpg on average. It’s been great for both performance and comfort, especially compared to SUVs like the Acadia or Sorento. My only gripe is the lack of trunk space compared to older Explorers. Still, I’d buy it again in a heartbeat.

@Zander
I totally agree—Ford did a good job making the Explorer look sporty compared to some of its rivals that look more like minivans. A smaller Tahoe or Yukon would do wonders for GM, but until then, I think the Explorer stands out.

@Zander
I’m with you on the lack of space, but it’s been worth it for the drive quality. Still figuring out how to make the most of the storage!

My 2022 ST is only a week old, and I’m getting about 12 mpg in the city—even in eco mode. Do I need to mess with tire pressure or use premium gas?

Honestly, just let it eat! It’s not a car you buy for fuel economy.

You don’t get an ST for gas mileage. Just enjoy the ride!

I’ve got a 2022 Limited 4WD. It’s been solid, though we’ve had a couple of minor issues like a loose heat shield. Compared to our old Escape, it’s way more spacious and perfect for family road trips.

I’m two years into owning a Platinum Hybrid, and while I love the look and features, I’ve had a lot of issues—especially with fuel economy and some quality problems. My biggest gripe is that it feels inconsistent, and Ford hasn’t been helpful. Anyone else dealing with similar headaches?

@Lior
Sorry to hear that. Sounds like you might’ve gotten stuck with a bad dealership. Have you thought about filing a complaint or looking into lemon laws?
