Totally get that—it’s a Ford Explorer forum, after all. The Explorer is a great SUV, but I wouldn’t say they’re the most reliable. Domestic brands just have their quirks, I guess.
Honestly, while car shopping, it seems like every brand has had some rough patches with their newer models, especially when it comes to the tech.
If you’re shopping, make sure you dig into both the good and bad reviews.
Here are the issues I had with my 2018 Explorer Sport:
- Side mirrors don’t repel rain well, so visibility is poor in wet weather
- Water from the windshield runs right onto the door windows and drips inside if the window is open
- Tons of gunk builds up in the seals and is a pain to clean
- An important cover on the car’s underside is removed for oil changes and is held by plastic clips that easily break. Mine fell off shortly after an oil change.
- Lighted door sill cover keeps popping out of the seal
- After a workout, I hung my mask on the rearview mirror and a few drops of sweat dripped down. Somehow, this nearly fried the touch panel and sound system, which stopped working for weeks. My fault, but still odd.
- The crash alert has frequent false alarms if someone turns into a driveway in front of me
- Blend door gear is plastic and prone to breaking
- Buttons started showing wear within the first few years (my BMW had similar wear issues though)
