Why go for an Explorer over a 4Runner?

@Kelley
What kind of boat are you towing? I’ve got a car trailer for my Mustang and CJ5, so that’s a factor for me.

My boat isn’t huge—under 3500lbs. The Explorer tows it fine and still manages around 20mpg.

I tow a 3500lb travel trailer with my ‘22 Explorer XLT, and it does a solid job. Just for reference.

No.

I wouldn’t. I’m not totally happy with my Interceptor Utility’s reliability and maintenance.

Toyota? Those things just keep going.

Seats are way more comfortable in the Explorer. Feels solid, better handling, quieter ride. Go test drive both, and you’ll notice the difference.

If you’re looking at the Sport or ST models: turbos!

I drive a lot, and those turbos aren’t cheap to replace.

In that case, you might want to pass on the Explorer.

Nope, go with the 4Runner.

Higher towing capacity, if that’s important to you, and more power. I almost went with a 4Runner but chose the Explorer. A quick Google search comparing the two side by side helped me make up my mind.

Rear AC was the deciding factor for me. My '17 Explorer’s climate control is great, with separate controls for the back seats, so I don’t have to deal with my kids’ complaints. Toyota didn’t have rear AC when I bought mine.

Used prices on Explorers are so much better. Been looking for a good-priced used 4Runner for about five years! My '09 Explorer with the V8 just keeps chugging along, so I can afford to wait.

Think of it this way: the Explorer is basically a car. Want smoother handling on paved roads? Go with the car. The 4Runner’s a truck. Lower MPG, rougher ride, but if you need clearance and off-road abilities, go with the truck.

Just got my wife a 2025 ST line. It’s been in the shop twice already. First time, it left her stranded, second time was for an engine light they couldn’t diagnose. All this before hitting 3k miles.

4Runner all the way. I’m still on this forum because I used to own two Explorers, but now I have a BMW X5 diesel that’s given me fewer problems than either Explorer did.

I’m leaning that way… The miles I put on and resale value make it the more logical choice.

Depends on if you want more of a truck feel. The Explorer is a lot more car-like. I think both have their strengths.
