What’s the deal with the Ford Explorer EV?

Ford has announced their new Explorer EV, but I don’t really know what to think. What are your thoughts on the design, features, and overall concept?

Do people actually get hyped for these SUVs that all look identical? Honestly, if you said this was the EV9, I’d believe you, and I just watched a video about that last week.

It’s not as big as you’d think. It’s actually 4.46 meters long, which is about two feet shorter than the US Explorer model. It’s built on the VW MEB platform, so it’s basically a disguised ID.4.

@Arlo
Fair point, but let’s be honest: the ID.4 is about as exciting as dry toast.

Hey, what’s wrong with toast? Add some bacon or cheese, and you’ve got yourself a meal! Just kidding, I get your point.

@Arlo
A medium Transit is only 4.2 meters long…

That’s the load length without counting the cab or engine bay. If you compare, a Tesla Model 3 is about 4.7 meters long.

You’re right, I looked it up. My car and Transit are about the same length, but I didn’t realize my car was almost 5 meters!

Honestly, if you took off the badge, I’d think this was an all-electric Range Rover.

@Wynne
Saw a brand-new Range Rover recently, and yeah, it looks almost identical to this.

Looks like another boring SUV to me. They all seem so generic now.

The more I look at it, the less I hate it. For a crossover, it’s not bad. At least it’s simple and not overly flashy like some BMWs these days. Still wouldn’t buy one, though.

Why can’t someone just make a normal EV estate? I just want something big to throw my stuff into without it being tall and ugly. The MG5 is close but so dull, and the Taycan is amazing but ridiculously expensive.

@Jin
Maybe Skoda will make an Octavia EV estate. Just stuff the Enyaq’s tech into it.

@Jin
Couldn’t agree more. Take a classic estate like the 5 Series, put a 100 kWh battery in it, and call it a day. Why do we need all these bloated SUVs?

Or better yet, why not create affordable conversion kits for existing cars?

@Indra
There are kits, but they’re usually based on Leaf batteries. Imagine if manufacturers just revived their classics as EVs. Instead, we get these oversized screens and clunky designs.

The steering wheel controls look like they’d be impossible to use. VW-style touch buttons are the worst.

VW loves making things harder. ‘Want to turn on the radio accidentally? Use our touch buttons!’

@Jaime
They really messed up. The old physical controls worked perfectly fine.
