I was seriously considering a 2022 Explorer, but I just came across some concerning reports about engine issues in certain trims. Now I’m wondering if I should rethink my decision.
I’d love to hear from experienced owners—especially those with an XLT—about reliability, common issues, and if this is something to actually worry about. Should I still go for it, or look elsewhere?
Only the ST, Platinum, and King Ranch trims are affected by the issue. From what I’ve read, the failure happens early, so if the car has been running fine, it’s likely not going to be a problem.
FWIW, I’m active on a few Explorer forums and haven’t seen this as a widespread issue. Plus, a 2022 will still have five years of powertrain warranty coverage.
I’ve got a ‘22 XLT, and I use the recall tracking app—so far, no issues. Mine was built in April ‘22, and I bought it in June ‘22. Been happy with it so far!
I work at a shop and see tons of the 3.0L turbo Explorers come through with 50-60k miles, and they’re still running just as well as when they were new.
For how many we service for regular oil changes, I rarely see them come in for engine issues.
Love my ‘22 XLT. That little 2.3L engine is solid, IMO. I tow a 3,500lb travel trailer with it, and it handles great. I’m at 15k miles now, and at least 3,000 of those are towing in the mountains of the PNW. No issues at all!
This is good to hear, thanks! We’ve been trying to narrow it down for a while, and it’s between a used XLT or a Jeep Grand Cherokee.
The XLT is my top choice because of its performance in the IIHS updated moderate overlap front crash test. Since it’s going to be a family vehicle, rear safety is a big factor. But man, the Grand Cherokee has always been my dream car.
Gonna test drive both today and see how they feel.
