Thoughts on 2023 Explorer Limited?

I’m shopping for a new car and considering the Explorer. The dealer mentioned there’s a stop sale on the Limited and Platinum trims due to a camera recall. Does anyone know how long this stop sale might last? I’m specifically interested in the Limited because it has ventilated seats.

Would you have any concerns about purchasing a new Ford Explorer right now? Trying to avoid letting that new car smell cloud my judgment!

I’ve been waiting on this recall since July or August. Promised dates keep slipping, so who knows? We’re also planning to buy the Limited—it’s perfect for us.

I had no idea this issue had been going on for so long! I was ready to negotiate today, but I guess I’ll have to wait longer, especially with the strike.

Yep, I put a deposit down on a vehicle, so now it’s just a waiting game. If you find a Limited on a lot, act fast and put down a deposit. Dealerships get the parts to fix vehicles on their lots, but the ones sitting in Chicago aren’t moving anytime soon due to the strike.

What’s the recall about? I just bought a new Explorer two weeks ago!

The recall affects the 360-degree camera system on higher trims like Limited, Platinum, and Sport. Units built after June 2023 might not have this issue, as some had the 360 camera deleted for a $500 credit.

My wife has had five brand-new Explorers over the years, driving each one for about seven years before getting a new one.

That’s reassuring! How has the maintenance been outside of regular upkeep?

Just regular maintenance on all of them, nothing major.

We’ve had mixed experiences. My wife’s 2022 Explorer has been fine so far, but her mom’s needed a new transmission at 60,000 miles, and her grandma’s had constant issues and ended up being a lemon. I’m not sure I’d recommend this generation of Explorers.

Interesting. What year models are those?

Two 2022 Limiteds and a 2023 Platinum.

If you’re debating between the 2.3L and 3.0L engines, the 2.3L is solid. I’ve been happy with my 2021 XLT and have no regrets about the engine. The Limited is really nice, though, especially with the ventilated seats.

I’ve heard good things about the 2.3L engine too. It’s a bit frustrating how many vehicles in this class get so-so reviews on Consumer Reports, though—especially considering the price of new cars these days.

I don’t know how long the stop sale will last, but I’ve heard they’re testing the recall fix at a dealer soon.

Good to know there’s progress being made. Thanks for sharing!
