Should I get the new Ford Explorer EV?

Hi Ford owners and EV enthusiasts,
I’m about to choose a new company car, and the new all-electric Ford Explorer (2025?) caught my attention. It has a 77kWh battery, and I’m loving the design. I’ve heard it’s somewhat like a smaller sibling to the Ford Mach-E, which a friend of mine owns. I haven’t had a chance to test drive it yet, though.

So, here’s my question: Is Ford reliable as an EV maker? How’s your experience been with Ford’s service, especially for their electric models? Does anyone here own an electric Explorer or a Mach-E and want to share their thoughts?

For context: I’m in Europe (mostly surrounded by other car brands), and range isn’t a big concern for me. If I get 200 km between charges, I’m fine. I’m not interested in Tesla comparisons as I can’t order one anyway. I’m also considering options like the Polestar (though I prefer the high seating of the Explorer), BMW iX1, or Volvo EX40 Extended Range. If you’ve tried any of these, please share your experience too!

It’s built on VW’s platform. A lot of people in the US avoid imports because of expensive repairs, but that might not be an issue in Europe.

Good point! Luckily, I’m in Europe, so VW parts are easier to get. But if it’s basically a rebadged VW, maybe I should just consider the ID.4 instead?

I’ve heard it doesn’t drive as well as the Mach-E. It’s basically a VW ID rebadge, with both the pros and cons that come with that.

If it only has two window switches like the VW, I’m out.

@Wilder
Unfortunately, some YouTube reviews do show it has the two-switch setup. Disappointing.

From my personal experience, it actually drives better than the Mach-E.

The Explorer EV for Europe uses the VW MEB platform. It’s basically a VW under the hood, so I wouldn’t even call it a true Ford.

Actually, Ford assembles it in Cologne and builds the battery packs themselves. It’s only licensed from VW.

Fair point, but I think the Explorer looks way better than the VW ID.4 or ID.3. That’s a big plus for me.

I’ve ordered one and it might arrive next week! I know people criticize things like the two-window switches and haptic buttons, but I don’t think it’ll bother me much.

I’ve got an AWD version coming in October. I’d love to know if the HUD projects onto the windshield or uses a flip-up glass. Also curious about the lighting features like puddle lamps and interior lights.

@Milo
I’ve started a Facebook group called Ford Explorer EV Europe. If you join, I’ll post pics and details once mine arrives!

Great suggestion! I just joined the group. It’s already super helpful to see what others are sharing.

Any updates? Would love to hear your thoughts once you’ve had the car for a bit.

@Leighton
I’ll definitely post a review soon. It’s built and on the way—should have it in a few weeks! If you’re on Facebook, join the Ford Explorer EV Europe group. Some people there have already received theirs.

@Hadi
Thanks! I joined the group and it’s been great seeing all the feedback and photos. Some owners are already reporting good range. My Ford dealer is still on vacation, so I’m waiting to test drive or place my order. He’s trying to push me toward the Kuga PHEV, but we’ll see what happens.

Does anyone know how to import the Explorer EV to the US?

You might want to post that as a separate question. It could get more visibility that way.
