I’m looking for some advice. I bought a 2020 Explorer ST with 74k miles and decided against the warranty to keep the cost down. The warranty would have covered bumper-to-bumper for 36k miles. A couple of months into ownership, the tracks for the sunroof messed up, and Ford quoted me $3500 for the repair. I’m thinking of bringing in a sunroof mechanic since I don’t trust myself with that fix. Now I’m wondering if I should go back and get that warranty, especially since I’m worried something else might go wrong. I plan to do some engine work, including an intercooler, intake, blow off valve, and an oil catch can, so I don’t want to get the warranty in case they blame those mods for any failures. The dealership also said they replaced the transmission and all the cameras before I got the car. So, should I go ahead and get the warranty, or will I be okay without it now?
I always get a 100k mile warranty.

It’s already at 74k, so that would get me to 100k miles.

No, you’d need the 100k bumper-to-bumper, not just the 36k. The ESP is based from mile 0, not added on top.
@Jory
Oh, I see. Yeah, I guess the 100k warranty makes more sense then.

74 + 36 = 110, so I would definitely get it.
Is this a third-party warranty or something directly through Ford? I thought you could only get the one from Ford if the car was under a certain age or mileage?

It was offered when I bought the car at a Lincoln dealership, so it’s basically Ford.
I’d get the warranty. I have a 2020 ST with 136,000 km. My warranty goes until 150,000 km. I’ve been having a lot of issues lately, and the warranty has definitely been helpful.

What kind of issues have you had?
@Zayne
I’ve had to replace the transmission solenoid and transmission harnesses. I’m still having shifting problems. Plus, every other morning, I get different warning lights that the dealer can’t replicate when I bring it in. I’m keeping track of it with photos so I have a record. I know once the warranty is up, the dealer will suddenly figure out what’s wrong.
@Sawyer
That’s rough. My transmission was just replaced, but I might get the warranty in case it fails again. I’ve heard these cars can be hit or miss with the transmission.
First year, 6th generation model vehicle. I would definitely get the warranty.

Good point. I also have a 2006 Explorer, and I love it, but it’s been nothing but problems lately.
Most of my issues showed up by 65k miles. From there to 98k miles, no problems at all. Early build 2020 ST.
I have a 2015 Sport. Had one of my turbos replaced, and the audio/environmental control unit broke after 3 weeks. Then this summer, the timing chain guide broke and caused big issues with the engine. Luckily, I had an extended warranty, so I got a brand new 3.5L gen 2 engine that would have cost me $11k.
