I’m thinking about buying a 2020 Ford Explorer ST. For those of you who own one, how has it been? I’ve heard it’s got great performance and works well in snow and light off-road conditions. Are they reliable? Will it last me between 150-300K miles? The one I’m looking at has 57,350 miles and is right within my budget. Would love to hear your thoughts and suggestions!
I have a 2020 Platinum (same engine). If you’re serious about this, make sure to BUY THE EXTENDED WARRANTY. These vehicles are known for transmission and electrical issues.

Just make sure you don’t buy the extended warranty from the same dealer you’re buying the car from.
@Jordan
Why’s that? I got mine from the same dealer.

Because you can usually get it cheaper through places like Zeigler or Granger.

Just make sure it’s a CPO (certified pre-owned). I’d highly recommend getting one that’s Gold Certified. These are fast cars, and you never know how they’ve been driven. Only buy Gold Certified, and go through someone like Zeigler or Granger as HQE said.

It’s fine as long as it’s from a good company like Ally or Assurant.

People say that because someone on this forum said so!

I mentioned my reasoning above, but okay, sure.
@Jordan
Honestly, I wouldn’t even buy the warranty until the 3-year/36,000-mile factory warranty is almost up.

I agree about the warranty. Mine’s currently in the shop for:
- Rear defrost replacement
- APIM (the system controlling the display) replacement
- Satellite antenna replacement
- GPS fixes
- Backup camera replacement
- Metal tips for window openers replaced
- Headlight replacement
This all happened at 75K miles. Thankfully, it’s all covered under the extended warranty. Total cost would’ve been around $10K otherwise.

That list of issues sounds like a no-go to me.
@Bliss
It’s not a dealbreaker. If you love the car, just get the warranty and enjoy it without worries.

It’s not a truck. Trucks have frames.
@Afton
Tell that to the folks who classify SUVs as trucks.
@Afton
So what about the Expedition or Navigator? Are they trucks or SUVs?

For it to be a truck, it needs to have an open bed and a frame.

Seems like you’re moving the goalposts now.
@Neve
Not really. It’s just common sense, but I guess not for everyone.

So what’s the Explorer Sport Trac then?
