Should I buy an Explorer ST (2020) or XLT (2023/2024)?

For my budget, I can only afford a 2020 ST with 50k miles. I love the idea of having a 400 hp monster, but I’m worried about maintenance and repair costs. On the other hand, I could get a brand-new XLT (2023/2024). Any advice would be appreciated!

I had a lot of issues with my 2020 Platinum. The only reason I upgraded to a 2024 ST was because I got a good trade-in offer. If you’re going for a 2020, make sure it has a warranty.

I have a 2020 Platinum, and even the 365 hp version feels plenty powerful. Can’t imagine 400 hp in the same motor. Maintenance might be steep, so proceed with caution.

Unless you can get a good extended warranty, I’d go with the XLT. The 2020 models had some early issues since it was the first year of the redesign. But if you’re set on the ST, it’s a beast.

I own a 2020 ST, and it’s been rock solid. No major issues so far, and it’s an absolute joy to drive. That said, this is a high-end car, and parts can be expensive (e.g., headlights cost $2,000). If you’re concerned, get an extended warranty.

I almost bought a 2020 ST but passed because of the complaints on forums—things like transmission issues, uneven doors, and leaking sunroofs. If you go with the ST, make sure to get a solid warranty.

Forums can be an echo chamber for issues. I’d recommend looking at real data from sources like Edmunds. If the ST makes you nervous, consider buying new instead of used. Warranties are helpful but are typically more expensive than the average cost of repairs.

I’d recommend test driving the 2020 ST. The XLT is good, but the ST offers a different driving experience—more power, better suspension, and upgraded features. Mine has had issues but is still a fantastic daily driver.

Go with the XLT for peace of mind and fewer potential maintenance headaches.

I own a 2022 ST Line, and the power is more than enough for daily driving.

I have a 2022 ST with just over 17k miles. No issues and I absolutely love the power!
