Help Needed: Buying a 2020 or Newer Explorer

Hi everyone,

My family is growing, and I’m in the market for a 2020 or newer Ford Explorer. I’d like some advice on what to look out for in terms of potential issues. I’ve heard about water pump problems, but I’m not sure if that’s still a concern with newer models.

What are the common issues or red flags I should be aware of when buying a used Explorer?

I haven’t heard about water pump issues with the 6th-gen Explorers (2020+), but there are some things to keep an eye on:

  • Transmission problems around 40-60k miles (10R80 transmission).
  • 360 camera recall and reverse camera (blue screen) issues.
  • SYNC 3 glitches (updates don’t always fix them).
  • Miscellaneous electronic issues.

I’ve had a 2020 ST and love it overall, but these are the things I’ve noticed.

Water pump issues were more common with the 5th-gen models (pre-2020). The 6th-gen models have addressed that problem. The most common issues now are related to electronics and occasional suspension concerns.

Whatever you do, make sure the vehicle is under warranty. I’ve owned a 2020 ST for six months, and it’s been in for repairs multiple times. If you’re looking at a 2020, check that it’s had all the necessary module updates and recalls addressed.

I’d recommend avoiding the 2020 model year if you can. They were the first year of the redesign, and there were several issues with quality control. If you can, go for a 2021 or newer.

If you’re planning on buying a used Explorer, I’d suggest getting a certified pre-owned model from a dealership. It’ll give you peace of mind, as you’ll get a warranty and know that it’s been inspected.

I wouldn’t recommend the Explorer. My 2023 has been a nightmare. The transmission is terrible, and the interior build quality is poor. I’ve owned several Fords, but this is my last one.
