Ford Cancels Its Three-Row Electric SUV. Thoughts?

@Avery
We’ve got seat subassembly lines for P800 on our floor. Guess the writing was on the wall.

This is disappointing. I was waiting for a three-row BEV from Ford. We have a Mach-E and an F-150 PowerBoost. Now I might have to look outside Ford for the first time.

If the hybrid is aggressive enough and has ProPower-like features, I’d consider it.

@Gael
The F-150 Lightning Gen 2 is also delayed by 18 months.

I’m in an Explorer ST now. I was hoping my next car would be an EV with Lightning-level power in an Explorer package. Really bummed about this.

I miss my ST. I love my Expedition, but the ST was something else.

@Gael
We got a Kia EV9 recently, and it’s been fantastic. Definitely worth checking out.

That’s the plan! Glad you’re enjoying it—I’ve heard great things.

If they made PHEVs for every model, I wouldn’t even consider another brand. The fact that the PHEV Ranger is Europe-only is absurd.

The Ranger is set for a refresh in 2026. Maybe they’ll bring a PHEV to the US then. Fingers crossed.

‘SUV Is Dead’ feels good to read.

Same here. The Mach-E is already an SUV. They should rebrand it and drop the Mustang name.

Disclaimer: I’m seriously considering buying a Mach-E, so I’m not hating on it.

The infrastructure isn’t ready and won’t be for at least another 10 years.

This is disappointing, but it makes sense. Family haulers like this are used for road trips, and the infrastructure isn’t there to make that easy yet with EVs. We need better batteries, faster charging, and more charging stations.

I love my Mach-E GT, but I can only recommend EVs to people who drive mostly locally and can charge at home. For now, they’re not ideal for everyone. Still, a three-row EV SUV would’ve been a nice option.

Good. Fewer EVs mean fewer electrical headaches for us techs to deal with.

Are EVs less reliable than hybrids or gas-powered cars these days?

There’s more high-voltage equipment on EVs, especially with the shift to 48V systems. Repairs on high-voltage systems often require two techs, and no one wants to risk getting zapped over something like a blower motor replacement.

Good.

Ford has no plan. This is a mess.

They’re reacting to market realities. This is actually smart.
