Just picked up my dream car! 2015 Ford Explorer Sport with 95,000 miles. Super excited to finally own one.
Congrats! Enjoy it, but make sure to save up for that inevitable water pump repair.
I keep hearing about this. Is it only an issue on the AWD/4WD models?
The water pump is driven by the timing chain, and over time the chain gets loose and slaps the guides at idle. That’s another issue to watch for.
It affects all 3.5L and 3.7L transverse engines because of the internal water pump design.
How do I know if I have one of those?
If you’ve got an Explorer, you’ve got one!
People always mention this here, but I’ve never had an issue. Just replace your coolant more often, and it’s less likely to go acidic and damage the water pump seals.
True, but you never know the maintenance history of every vehicle, which is why it’s such a common failure. I changed my coolant at 50K and will do it again soon. It’s definitely cheaper to keep up with fluid changes.
Very nice! I wanted one a few years back, but it was out of my price range at the time. I ended up with a 2013 Limited. Just be ready to set aside $2-3K for the water pump when needed. Mine’s at 137K miles, and I’ve had it since 80K.
I’m a mechanic, so I plan on getting another 30K miles out of it before replacing the timing chain, guides, and water pump myself. Since I’m a transmission guy, I’ll drop the engine, replace everything, and throw in a new torque converter for less than what it’d cost the average person to just do the water pump.
Congrats! So you’re a mechanic too? That’s awesome
Congrats! I used to have one. Now I’ve got a 2020, but I miss my 2015. I think it looked better.
You should get a 5star 93 tune for it.
I’ve got a 5-year-old, a 3-year-old, and an 18-month-old… a tune is something I’m never going to get, lol.
It’s a beautiful car! Don’t forget to clean the injectors and consider walnut blasting for the intake.
