Looking for thoughts on whether to go with the Ford Explorer or the Expedition. Which one do you prefer, and why?
I’d go with the Expedition. We sold our ‘22 Expedition for an Explorer, and my wife regrets it every day. She plans to get another Expedition once her job changes and she doesn’t drive 25k miles a year. The 3.5 EcoBoost is great, and for a large SUV, the turning radius is surprisingly good.
Expedition if it’s in your budget. The fuel economy difference isn’t huge, and the Expedition will hold its value much better.
I much prefer the Expedition, but it does cost more.
The Expedition is obviously much larger. Is that what you’re looking for?
It depends on your needs. I was considering the Explorer ST or Platinum trims because the Expedition felt too large for my needs. I ended up with a Lincoln Aviator, and it’s been fantastic.
Sizing is key here. I moved from a couple of ‘03 Explorers to a 2010 Expedition due to travel needs at the time. I even considered the EL/Max version but stuck with the regular size. Now our needs have changed, and I’m looking to downsize in a few years. Think about what you’ll use it for most.
Just don’t crash the Expedition head-on. Check this video.
If you’re doing minor hauling and towing, go with the Explorer. If you need more space, the Expedition is the better choice.
We switched from a Navigator to an Explorer and don’t regret it. The Explorer is easier to park and navigate tight lots. We use it for dogs and shopping, and it works great for us. If you need a lot of space, though, the Expedition might be better.
It depends on how many people you plan to carry. The Expedition is much bigger but worse on gas.

It’s just for me. I just like large SUVs.
It’s the biggun!

That’s what I’m leaning toward. I like it more than the Explorer.
I have a ‘23 Explorer ST-Line. Go for the Expedition—the Explorer’s cheap interior can rattle and clunk on bumpy roads, and it’s really annoying.
We’ve got a ‘21 Expedition Max, and it’s been my favorite family vehicle. The turning radius is great for its size, and it fits our needs perfectly for road trips with grandparents and kids. We live in Georgia, so parking isn’t a problem, though.
The Expedition is a great vehicle. You can do more with it than the Explorer.
We have a 2020 Explorer, and it’s great for our family of three. That said, our next vehicle will probably be an Expedition for the extra space.
I’ve had both. The Explorer is a good vehicle, but the Expedition is simply better in almost every way—ride quality, power, build, and tech. I wouldn’t go back to an Explorer after having an Expedition.
Expedition. The Explorer seems to need more shop visits compared to the F150 or Expedition.
