My wife works at Ford, and we’re looking to get a new vehicle. I’ve been eyeing the Ford Explorers but am a bit confused about the differences between the models.
What I like: I love the look of the Sport models—they seem to sit lower and have a more aggressive appearance compared to the XLT. I also like the black wheels and the overall sporty vibe. However, I’ve seen some XLT models that look very similar to the Sport, which has me wondering if it’s worth going for the Sport trim.
We have two young kids, so leather interior is a must for easy cleanup. I also plan to add a hitch for a future pop-up camper. Living in Michigan, AWD is non-negotiable.
I’d love some recommendations or tips on the different trims, features to prioritize, and anything I should know before heading to the dealership. Thanks in advance!
The XLT with the Sport Appearance Package might be what you’re looking for. It gives you the black wheels, black trim, and leather interior while keeping the cost down. If you plan to tow, go for the V6 engine with the Class 3 hitch for a 5,000-lb towing capacity.
I recently got a 2018 Sport, and it’s been amazing. The 3.5L EcoBoost has great power, and the suspension is perfect for a sporty drive. If you like a smooth, performance-focused ride, go for the Sport. Just keep in mind the fuel economy isn’t stellar (I average around 17 MPG).
The Sport has a stiffer suspension that some might find uncomfortable for daily driving. If you’re looking for something softer and more family-friendly, consider the Platinum. It has all the luxury features and still comes with the 3.5L EcoBoost engine.
I have an XLT with the captain’s chairs in the second row, and it’s been great for the kids. I also added the towing package for flexibility. The XLT gives you a lot of customization options without breaking the bank.
XLT: Best for customization, affordable, and you can add AWD and leather.
Sport: Aggressive styling, sporty suspension, and the 3.5L EcoBoost for performance.
Platinum: Top of the line with all the luxury features. Great if you want everything included.
If towing is a priority, go for the Sport or Platinum with the Class 3 hitch.
If you’re leaning toward the Sport but want a more luxurious feel, check out the Platinum. It comes with everything, including the 3.5L EcoBoost, leather, and premium sound. Definitely worth considering for long-term ownership.
Captain’s chairs are a game-changer for families. They make it so much easier for kids to get in and out, and they’re more comfortable for long trips. Highly recommend adding that feature.
