Let me know what you think or if you’ve had the same issue and fixed it. I have a 2014 Explorer Sport Ecoboost that starts smoking badly after about 10 minutes of idling. The smoke smells and looks like burnt oil but goes away once I start driving. It doesn’t smoke right away; it starts after a while of idling and stops when driving. There’s no loss of power and it barely uses any oil.
I’m not losing much oil at all. started to think it might be the PCV valve. I hope it’s that and not a problem with the turbo. If it were the turbo, I’d expect the smoke to appear right when I start the engine and not go away after driving.
Replace the PCV valve first. If that doesn’t fix it, try removing the cats from the turbos and check if there’s any oil in them. If you find oil in either cat, it could mean that turbo is bad. If there’s no oil, then the turbos are probably still good, at least the seals are.
I’ve had engines with leaking valve covers (like on BMWs). After about 10 minutes of running, they’d start smoking and smelling like burning oil. I’m not sure if this is common with these engines. Are you losing a noticeable amount of oil when you check the dipstick??
