Are 2016-2019 Ford Explorers a good choice for a family car?

Good to hear! Thanks for sharing your experience.

Rear AC lines tend to leak and require dropping the subframe to fix. PTU failures are also common on both turbo and NA models.

Dropping the subframe sounds intimidating, but I’ve done it before on my Mustang. Thanks for the heads-up!

Ford transmissions don’t fail at 100k miles if you get the towing package because it includes an upgraded oil cooler. Without it, there’s a risk of coolant and transmission fluid mixing, which ruins the transmission.

I had a 2017 and could still smell exhaust in the cabin even after the fix. Google it—it’s a known issue.

Thanks, I’ll check it out.

Nope.

Avoid the 3.5 unless you’re ready for a $4500 timing chain repair.

How hard is it to do yourself if you’ve got a lift? I’m comfortable with maintenance and did the timing belt on my wife’s Galant.

It’s not easy. You’d need a cam locking kit, which costs about $400, and it’s a much bigger job than a Galant’s timing belt.
