I’m helping some friends shop for a used car, specifically these models. Are they reliable overall? Anything specific we should check before buying?
Which 3.5 are you talking about? Ecoboost or Ti-VCT?

Yeah, but is it the Ecoboost or the Ti-VCT/cyclone/duratec?

Oops, my bad! It’s the Ti-VCT V6. Here’s the listing: https://www.wheatcountrymotors.ca/inventory/2017-ford-explorer-xlt/5720
@Kiran
Wow, $29,000? Is that how much they go for in Canada?

Yeah, prices for used cars haven’t dropped as much here yet. We’re usually about 6 months behind trends in the US. Also, with the exchange rate, it’s about $22K USD.
I’ve got a 2017, and it’s been great. No issues so far, but the water pump will probably need replacing eventually.

Good to know, thanks.
I love this generation of Explorers. They last a long time, and the drivetrain is super reliable. Plus, they ride nice and have good features.
If you’re looking at one with around 120,000 miles, check the water pump (you can look for signs at the weep hole). You might need to set aside $3,500 for the water pump and timing chain if it hasn’t been done yet. I’d use that as a bargaining chip if it needs work.
@roy127
Thanks for the heads-up! This one only has 70,000 km on it.
