I’ve owned a few Mustangs and loved them, but with life changing, I’m looking to move to an SUV. I’ve always loved the look of Ford Explorers (both exterior and interior) and I’m now planning on purchasing one.
I’m considering a 2022 Ford Explorer Limited that was previously used as a rental and has 26k miles on it. Any feedback on this year and trim, questions to ask, or things to watch out for would be much appreciated!
Got a 2023 Limited. We love it! It’s new (October), so we haven’t had issues yet. The tech package is great, and the 2.3L engine has plenty of power. AWD is currently giving us 24 MPG on highway trips and about 20 MPG for short, non-highway trips. It’s been very capable in snow conditions.

Definitely. The Limited is really nice. I considered it, but I went with the XLT for the style. My XLT has the sport appearance package, and I didn’t need all the tech, so that’s why I chose it. Occasionally, I think I should’ve gone with the Limited, but overall, I’m happy. Explorers, like any other car, can be a gamble. Some are great, and others have problems. So far, mine’s been great.
@Haru
Makes sense. That’s pretty much my take on Explorers. There’s a lot of negative feedback, but since there are so many on the road, it’s inevitable that some will be problematic. Just hoping it’s not mine! knock on wood

Good luck, I hope so too! Is it a certified pre-owned vehicle through a Ford dealer? If not, you still have about a year left on the factory warranty.

I’m looking at getting it from CarMax. It will still have the factory warranty for about a year on the basic and a few more years on the powertrain.
We’ve had four Explorers since 2011, including a 2020 Limited and a 2023 ST. We’ve absolutely loved them all and haven’t had any issues or problems to report.
Not sure what your financial situation is, but if you can find an ST within your price range, you can still have your fun and be responsible too. Also, you wouldn’t think so, but the 4-cylinder engine is surprisingly quick.
Just dropped off my 2022 Limited Hybrid RWD at the dealer. Had to be towed there because I had major issues with the differential or brake system. The rear wheels locked up and had me skidding down the highway. Not sure of the exact issue, but it’s a 2-year-old vehicle with 24k miles. It nearly cost me everything. I did enjoy it up until that point. Opted for all the upgrades, and it was a comfy ride, but considering the breakdown, I’d probably never buy another new Ford vehicle again.
I have a 2022 Platinum and a 2021 XLT. I like them better than other 3-row vehicles. No problems so far. I was looking for a Limited, but the price difference between the XLT and Limited made the XLT a better choice for me.
That’s great! A year of bumper-to-bumper warranty and a 5-year/60k powertrain warranty. Many talk about the expensive extended warranties, but if the car has issues, you’ll know within that 5/60. Enjoy your Explorer! Someday you’ll get another Mustang too! Also, the 2.3L engine is more than adequate. I have a Mustang GT, and when I get into my Explorer, I never feel it’s underpowered. Good luck, friend!

I bought a 120k-mile bumper-to-bumper warranty when we bought our car new. It was $2500.
That’s cool, you have peace of mind. One of the reasons I didn’t get the warranty is because I don’t drive much anymore. I only do about 7,000 miles a year, so by the time my Explorer reaches high mileage, it’ll be over 10 years old or I’ll have sold it.
@Haru
u/Own-Ad-503, appreciate it! That was more or less my thought process too. I’m a bit worried about it being a former rental, but some of the pros of rentals are they’re usually well taken care of (though I know people beat the heck out of them, I’ve done it myself!). It’s good to hear about the power. Mustangs have a soft spot in my heart, and I’m hoping to get another along with the Explorer when I have more money.
