2025 Explorer… First Year of a New Design, More Problems?

Trying to decide between buying a 2024 now or waiting a few months for the 2025. With all the changes, is this technically a new generation? If so, should I expect the typical first-year issues that come with a major update?

I had a 2012 Focus, which was the first of its generation, and it had more than its share of problems. Don’t want to go through that again.

I wouldn’t worry too much. The mechanical parts are mostly the same, and Ford has had years to iron out issues with this platform.

Got it. This is helpful. Thank you.

Most of the updates are cosmetic, aside from the infotainment system. The core of the vehicle is still the same as the 2020–2024 models. Some minor engineering tweaks were made to simplify production, which should actually reduce issues rather than introduce new ones.

They’ve also limited the number of trims at launch to keep manufacturing streamlined and avoid complications. While there might still be some minor early hiccups, it shouldn’t be anywhere near as bad as some past first-year models.

@Angel
Just picked up a 2025 Explorer, and the dealership can’t get an inspection sticker because it won’t register on their system. They told me to drive 100 miles and bring it back. Still waiting at the dealership… been 90 minutes now.

This isn’t a full generational change—just a refresh. The biggest functional update is the new infotainment system. It’s the first Ford vehicle using this new software.

Got it, thanks.

Bought a 2025 Explorer Platinum, and it’s been stuck at the dealership for over a month. The check engine light keeps coming on with drivetrain/4WD warnings. They told me it’s the shifter control module, but Ford has it on backorder with no ETA.

They gave me a loaner, which is nice, but it has some restrictions. The frustrating part is that Ford is still building and selling new ones, so obviously, they have these parts somewhere. Why can’t they get one for my repair?

From what I’ve heard, the biggest change is the new software. If there are issues, they’ll likely be related to that rather than mechanical problems.
