Hi! I’m thinking about buying a 2023 Ford Explorer King Ranch. Are there any issues I should know about? For example, Nissan is known for CVT problems in certain years—anything like that with the Explorer?
Denali is a GM trim, not available on the Explorer. The equivalent would be King Ranch or Limited. Explorers are solid SUVs in their class. Most issues come from neglect. Since these have turbocharged engines, you need to drive them like it occasionally to keep the system clear. Also, avoid extended idling—it can cause damage. Basic maintenance will make it last.

Oops, I meant King Ranch! Thanks for catching that and for the advice!

The 3.0L turbo is better than the 3.5L turbo in my opinion. It’s more efficient and balanced but still powerful. If you’re towing, I’d recommend looking at V8 options, but those are only in GM or Dodge now.
@Spencer
Thanks, but I don’t plan to tow anything.
Like someone else mentioned, most issues come from poor maintenance. Turbocharged engines need regular oil changes, and higher octane fuel is often recommended. People who say Fords are junk often don’t maintain their vehicles properly, then blame the car when something breaks. Same folks will ruin a Chevy Suburban and then buy a Kia, claiming the Suburban was trash.

I’m pretty diligent about maintenance. I figure if I take care of the car, it’ll take care of me.

I’ve got a 2020 Explorer ST with the same engine. The only issue I’ve had is a bad battery, which cost me $240 to replace. Make sure to do oil changes every 5,000 miles and rotate the tires regularly.
There have been some reports of sensor, transmission, and camera problems in the 2021-2022 models, but I’m not sure if they affect the 2023s. I’d recommend looking into it. Also, the infotainment menus can lag a bit.
I’ve got 44K miles on mine, and while I love the power, I’m skeptical about keeping it long-term. If you’re buying new and plan to keep it a while, consider a Ford ESP extended warranty—it’s cheaper from Granger than your dealer. Aside from that, the engine is strong. I even added an exhaust, and the torque is incredible.
Stay on top of oil and filter changes. Haven’t heard of any major Explorer issues recently.
We had an issue with the trim around the windshield breaking off on a windy day. It’s called an A-pillar trim. I replaced it myself after ordering the part on Amazon. Not a huge deal, but something to be aware of.
I’ve noticed some transmission issues in the newer Explorers, but they seem less common compared to other Ford models. I drove a 2022 Explorer Limited as a rental while my Escape was in for repairs. The shifting felt a bit off—sometimes jerky, sometimes sluggish. Still, it handled surprisingly well for its size, and the interior was really nice.
From what I’ve read, the 4-cylinder lacks power, and the ride can feel stiff due to the tires and suspension, especially in higher trims. The V6 seems to be the better choice. Overall, reliability is rated slightly above average. The King Ranch should be a great pick.
If you do get one, post some pictures! Good luck!

What’s wrong with the larger wheels? Are 21-inch wheels a bad idea?

Bigger rims mean less tire sidewall, so there’s less cushion to absorb bumps. Combine that with a stiff suspension, and you feel every bump. They look great but aren’t as comfortable, especially for a family vehicle.
Make sure the dealership has done the Ford 360 camera recall. They won’t sell it without fixing that first. We dealt with this issue for months, but the fix just came out recently.
