Noticed some bubbling under the paint on my 2021. Anyone know if this is rust or something else?
That’s not rust; the panels are aluminum. What you’re seeing is aluminum corrosion under the paint causing it to bubble up.
Ford used to have a TSB (Technical Service Bulletin) for aluminum corrosion issues on vehicles under 5 years old. It might still be around, so you could check with your dealer to see if they’ll cover it.
@Fable
Ford’s had issues with paint sticking to aluminum for about 20 years. But in this case, I’m pretty sure the doors are steel, not aluminum. Usually, it’s the hood and the hatch that are made of aluminum.
@Sterling
Quick way to find out… just grab a magnet. If it sticks, it’s steel.

Did the magnet test, and it looks like it’s steel.
Had the same thing happen on my 2017 Explorer Platinum. The paint started bubbling on the hood within the first six months, and they ended up replacing the hood. It was aluminum under the paint, for sure.
Looks like rust to me, causing the paint to bubble. I’d keep an eye on it and maybe use fluid film if it gets worse. This is a common spot where rust can start.

Nope, it’s aluminum corrosion, not rust.

I’d agree with using fluid film to help prevent rust, but yeah, this looks like aluminum corrosion instead.
Random question here—been thinking about switching out of Subarus and getting an Explorer that’s a couple of years old. How are you liking yours so far?

I’m loving it! I’ve got the XLT with the appearance package, plus I wrapped the roof and spoiler in black, so it looks pretty sharp and high-end. It’s a solid ride with good features for the price… checks all the boxes for me! Just need to sort out this corrosion issue.
@Harlow
Congrats on the ride, man. I’ve never owned a Ford, but GM lost me when they turned the Trailblazer into an economy car. I owned a few before that and loved them. Explorer’s on my list, though I’m also eyeing a Golf R or GTI, which is a totally different direction.
Anyway, enjoy the new car!
