2021 Ford Explorer XLT

I just bought a 2021 Ford Explorer XLT with just under 25k miles on it, and I’m loving it so far! Are there any issues I should keep an eye on or things to be aware of? I’m also curious if the auto engine shut-off actually saves gas. Any tips on using the different drive modes like Sport or Eco?

The only minor issue I’ve noticed is the auto-hold system sometimes fails, but I think it’s because I shift into reverse too quickly. I got a pretty good deal on it through Ford financing.

Auto start-stop is worth it if the engine is off for seven or more seconds, based on a large study. It does save some gas, but it can be annoying in stop-and-go traffic.

I have a 2023 Limited and can confirm Eco mode noticeably improves MPG in city driving. With 93 octane in Sport mode, the low-end torque is impressive—feels like a Mustang!

Regarding the auto-hold, if it’s acting up, make sure you’re not switching gears too quickly. A quick restart often fixes minor glitches like that.

We have the same model and had a slight jerk when shifting and a delay going into reverse. Dealer reset the transmission’s learning mode, and it’s been great since. Eco mode is fantastic for daily driving around town.

Don’t worry about the water pump—6th-gen Explorers don’t have the 3.5L engine with that issue. Enjoy the ride!

I’ve had the same year and model for a while now. Loving it too! The only thing I’ve noticed is the occasional auto-hold failure, but it’s rare.
