2021 Ford Explorer Platinum - Driver Experience?

I recently got into what I thought was a minor fender bender in my 2013 Explorer Limited, but it ended up being totaled by my insurance company. So, I’m in the market for a new vehicle.

There’s a 2021 Explorer Platinum nearby with all the features I want, priced reasonably. However, I’ve heard mixed reviews about the 2021 model year and wanted to get some insight before deciding.

Does anyone have experience with this specific model? Any recurring issues I should be aware of? I’m especially curious if the transmission problems from earlier models have been resolved and if the paint quality has improved. I had recurring rust issues with the moonroof motor on my 2013—has this been addressed?

Any advice or input would be super helpful, as I’m planning to look at it tonight. If it checks out, I might move forward.

I own a 2020 Platinum with 72k miles. It’s been the best vehicle I’ve had—great acceleration, good fuel economy (23.8 MPG lifetime average), and fantastic for towing. No issues with the moonroof or transmission so far, but I’ve kept up with regular maintenance (transmission flush at 60k, oil changes every 5k). The B&O sound system gets mixed reviews, but I think it’s great.

Definitely get an extended warranty (EW). I bought mine online for much cheaper than what the dealer offered. Check the Carfax for mileage and service history before committing.

2020-2021 models had some known issues: module firmware updates, catalytic converter welds, flex pipe failures, and occasional front axle problems. These were mostly addressed in late 2021 builds, so check the build date. For earlier builds, an EW is a good idea.

I have a 2021 XLT and love it so far. I also got the extended warranty for peace of mind. If you can confirm the service history, you should be in good shape.

For a March 2021 build, you should be okay. Most of the earlier issues seem to have been sorted by then, but still inspect everything thoroughly and consider an extended warranty.

Chicago-built Explorers have had build quality issues, but the problems you’re asking about—like the moonroof motor rusting—seem less common in this generation. Make sure the modules are updated and look out for alignment issues or panel gaps.
