Hey everyone, I found a 2017 Explorer Sport with 101k miles for $19k. It has all the options I’m looking for. I’m hoping to negotiate it down to around $18k. What do you think? Worth it or should I keep looking?
Go for it.

Should I just plan on replacing the water pump?

- Water pump
- Turbos
- Intake valve cleaning
- Injectors
And if you want to tune it for better reliability, replace the oil pump with the M390HV.
@Corey
Sounds like it could get expensive fast… yay.

Not really. If you take care of those things, it should be good for another 100k miles.

While you’re at it, replace the timing chain and guides. After that, you’re pretty much set.

It just feels like a lot of upfront cost. This is the first car I’m buying with my own money.
@Darwin
You could just drive it until the water pump goes and then do all the repairs at once to make it bulletproof. DIY would cost around $1,000; a shop would be $3-5,000.

Water pump replacement can cost almost $4,000.

I had mine done a month ago, and it cost $2,554.72 out the door.
Go for it. I just got a 2019 XLT with 86k miles for $18,900.
Don’t make the same mistake I did. Do you have any outdoor plans like using a roof tent or towing a trailer? Check the capacity ratings for that specific year.

Probably not planning on a roof tent, and I don’t have any trailer plans.
That’s a $10k car, man. I got one with 60k miles for $8,000. It does need a water pump, though, and that’s $4,000.

Car market must be better where you are. I haven’t seen anything with that kind of mileage anywhere close to that price.
@Darwin
I’m in California/Vegas.
I bought a 2016 with 95k miles for $15k and I love it. Just make sure you get a warranty! I have one, and so far my only major repair was fixing an evaporator leak.
I love my 2017 Sport. Gas mileage sucks, but oh well.
