So earlier this week, my steering locked up completely. Luckily, it happened just as I was about to leave work and right when I started the car. I work at a mechanic shop, so I ordered a new rack and pinion from Autozone, which isn’t the best but was my only option. My mechanic installed it and did the programming, but I still have no power steering. The steering isn’t locked, but it doesn’t have any assist either. The same error codes were there before, and although they were cleared before programming, they came back once the new rack was installed and the car was started. Any ideas on what’s going on?
I literally had this done, and was advised to go with a factory rack instead. It might also be an issue with the programming not being done correctly.
I’m not so sure of the answer, but I have one of my own about your steering issue. Did you notice any problems before the steering column went bad, or did it just suddenly stop working? I’ve heard a lot about these columns failing, and I have the same car, a 2014 Explorer XLT.
It started making a grinding noise while turning about a month or so before being completely locked up.
I just had to replace the steering assembly in my 2017 model. It might be the same issue. I was 5 months out of warranty, and it cost $4,700. Not thrilled about it.
Wtf why so much???
That’s way too much. I’ve seen prices about $1,800 for a new steering assembly, but it also needs to be reprogrammed further.
lol I’m just a girl. They saw me coming.
That’s pretty messed up, in my understanding the core charges should be yours.
